One continent. Many doors. How funds get sold in Europe.

The AIFMD is the EU framework for alternative fund managers. EU funds run by EU managers can be marketed across the EU under a passport. Non-EU managers cannot get it, and market country by country under national private placement regimes.

What the film says

In private markets, a fund can be welcome in one country, and not yet next door. The rulebook is the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive. Europe's law for these managers. Say a manager in Luxembourg, with an EU fund. It meets the rules, and gets a passport. One passport. It can market across the EU. Now a manager in New York. No passport. It goes country by country. Each under that country's own private placement rules. Germany. France. The Netherlands. Three rulebooks, on top of the reporting and disclosure. So why do investors care? It decides whether and how a fund can be offered to them at all. And it's regularly updated. One map. Many doors.
