Japan regulator warns over retail exposure to overseas private assets
Friday, November 6, 2026 · first reported by Private Equity Wire
Japan's Financial Services Agency (FSA) has told financial institutions to take care when selling overseas private asset products to retail clients, citing liquidity, transparency and investors' grasp of what they are buying, Bloomberg reported. Variable life insurance policies backed by private assets are a particular worry.
The FSA said it does not intend to restrict growth of Japan's private markets industry, but has not indicated whether it would approve insurance products invested mainly in private assets. As of March, Morningstar Inc. data put holdings in public investment trusts tied to private assets at JPY1.5trn, twice the level a year earlier.
